   Myths & Facts

Myth:  There will be a tax increase if the General Obligation Bond is approved.

Fact:   Taxes will not be increased if the General Obligation Bond is passed.  Current taxes are sufficient to cover the bond payments.

Myth:  Growth in student enrollment at Gwinnett County Public Schools has slowed down and new schools are not needed.

Fact:  Gwinnett's enrollment increased by about 4,000 students in 2007.  It is the state's largest school system with more than 155,000 students and is still growing.

Myth:  Funds from the General Obligation Bond will not decrease the number of classroom trailers used at Gwinnett schools.

Fact:  The bonds will allow Gwinnett to build 8 new schools and  additions at 10 existing schools -- for a total of 520 new classrooms.  This will greatly reduce the need for trailers.

Myth:  Gwinnett can continue building new schools and upgrading technology without funds from the General Obligation Bond.

Fact:  Without the bonds, construction and technology improvements will come to a two-year halt beginning in 2010.  This will significantly delay getting students out of trailers and into classrooms and prevent schools from getting essential technology upgrades.
